HERE'S YOUR CHANCE, DON'T BLOW IT !

South Carolina Electric & Gas (SCE&G) nuclear power plant

For the last ten years our electricity bills have skyrocketed.  We’ve been forced to pay rate hike after rate hike.  We have NO choices when it comes to buying electricity in South Carolina.  Now we hear this…   Last week utility company South Carolina Electric & Gas (SCE&G) and taxpayer-owned utility Santee Cooper announced that they would be abandoning their incomplete nuclear power plant in the Midlands even after sinking nearly $10 billion into the project.   This week, Duke Energy floated the idea that they might follow suit on a similar, but smaller unfinished project in the Upstate.    Ratepayers across the state have been subsidizing the up-front construction of these power plants.  In the case of SCE&G and Santee Cooper, we’ve already been forced to pay them $1.4 billion (with a “b”).    Now that they’ve have walked away from the failed projects, all of the utilities want a ratepayer-funded bailout for ALL of their costs…   And thanks to state politicians, they’re going to get one!   You read that correctly: we’re forced to pay billions…the politicians and utility companies will walk away virtually unharmed…consumers don’t get a single watt of electricity in return.   It’s all thanks to a bailout law that lobbyists and state legislators wrote and passed a few years back called the “Base Load Review Act”.   Not only does this law force us to pay the up-front debt to construct these projects, but it also leaves us on the hook to bail out the utility companies when the project fails.   The legislatively-appointed Public Service Commission (PSC) determines our electricity costs.  And they’ve already hinted they will pass another electricity rate hike on us this year to pay for the bailout.   Who is to blame for this mess?   State legislators.   Along with special interest lobbyists, they wrote, voted and passed this abomination into law.  Many of them are still in the Statehouse (we’ll get into that later…).   Legislators appoint the PSC Commissioners who have approved nine consecutive electricity rate hikes.    They approve the board that controls Santee Cooper.   State legislators control the entire energy system in South Carolina.    They created this mess, and now it’s up to us to take control of our government.    WHAT CAN WE DO RIGHT NOW?   Some politicians have already started to skirt responsibility, hide and place blame elsewhere.   Some are talking about coming back to Columbia for a “special legislative session” where they will undoubtedly waste our time and money by coming up with a half-baked idea behind closed doors.   We can’t let them do it!   Click here to send your politicians an email to demand a full repeal the bailout law and stop the rate hikes.    Tell them that they better not waste our money with a special session.  No “skinny repeals.”  No trimming around the edges.  No half-baked “reforms.”  No “behind-closed-door” deals like the gas tax hike. No compromises!   The only good thing they can do right now is a full, clean repeal of the Base Load Review Act.  Anything more or less is going to literally cost us more money on our monthly bill…   In the coming weeks we will be rolling out different ways you can hold politicians accountable.  We will also be pushing reforms to meet our ultimate goal: more energy competition at a cheaper cost.   But for now, we must make sure the legislators who cost us billions of our hard-earned money are held accountable.   As always, don’t hesitate to contact me if you need any help reaching your politicians.   For Freedom, Dave Schwartz President, Freedom Action Network of South Carolina (843) 990-3336
