Robert Galinsky has been teaching teenagers on Rikers for just under a
year and leads rich discussions and performance literacy workshops
around the issues of: the positives of making mistakes, the wisdom
gained during incarceration, self love, vulnerability as power not
weakness and more. Galinsky says, "All of these teenagers are incredibly
smart and just need a little help to make better decisions, and take
responsibility for those decisions, so they can be informed and
empowered in the face of the mammoth mass incarceration industrial
complex."
Literacy for Incarcerated Teens, Inc. (LIT) - is the only non-profit organization of its kind working to end illiteracy among New York’s incarcerated young people by inspiring them to read. LIT strives to create excellent school libraries in New York City’s juvenile detention centers and non-secure facilities for young people adjudicated as delinquents, the State’s residential facilities operated by the Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS), and also in schools that serve young people living in group homes.
